The Professional as a Symbol:
30 Years of Filmic Representation of Business, Industry, and Professionalism in the Holocaust
The Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE) is an intensive, two-week study program in professional ethics and ethical leadership designed to challenge Fellows to critically examine constructs, current developments and issues that raise ethical concerns in their professions in contemporary settings in which they work.
As a 2024 Fellow, I spent two weeks in Berlin and Poland visiting key sites of Nazi history and reflecting on the role of businesspeople and other professionals in the Holocaust.
Fellows write papers upon returning from Europe on contemporary ethical issues. Below is mine, on the evolving filmic interpretation of professionalism during the Holocaust, which analyzes six films: Schindler’s List (1993), The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008), Defiance (2008), Inglourious Basterds (2009), Son of Saul (2015), and The Zone of Interest (2023).
